Beyond Urban Displacement: Suburban Poverty and Eviction

Eviction has been studied almost exclusively as an urban phenomenon. The growing suburbanization of poverty in the United States, however, provides new cause to analyze prevalence and correlates displacement beyond cities. This study analyzes urban-suburban disparities eviction rates across 71 large metropolitan areas. We show that is a common experience suburbs well Urban exceed suburban most cases, but one six areas experienced higher suburbs. Multilevel models key eviction—especially median rent—influence patterns differently contexts. explore variations through case studies Milwaukee, Seattle, Miami. Metropolitan with larger shifts toward poverty, more expensive rental markets, segregated evictions.
